More than just being the average cookie that you might like to munch on, fortune cookies are fun because of the messages that are inside them.
However, fortune cookies can be a challenge to prepare at home and could backfire into becoming an unfortunate event.
With all the paper and dough, baking the cookies the right way could be tough.
In this guide we'll be teaching you how to make delicious fortune cookies step-by-step!
Quick Tip: An extra pair of hands also means double the fun and triple the work done, so now is the chance to get your favorite helper in the kitchen!
Ingredients you’ll need
- 1 cup (5 oz) of all-purpose flour
- ½ cup of melted butter
- ¾ cup of sugar
- ¼ tsp of vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp of almond extract
- 3 tbsp of water
- 3 large egg whites
Of course, you’ll also need some fortune cookie messages.

Start by preheating your oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
After that it’s very simple, all you have to do is begin by whipping egg whites, sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and almond extracts together in a large bowl.
Whisk the mixture until it turns frothy, but not very thick! You could use a stand or hand mixer for the purpose.
Gently and gradually add flour to it. Whip the mixture until the flour completely “disappears” into it without forming any air bubbles or lumps. It should be a smooth, shiny mixture with the batter being of the consistency of regular cookies.
This is where the tricky and “crafty” part of it all begins!
Begin by shaping the batter into small circles onto a silicon mat lined with parchment paper. Use a tablespoon measure. Spread the batter out in 3-inch circles.
Make very sure to not go overboard with the batter because you need these cookie circles to be very thin so that you’re able to fold them up later gently.
We would recommend not going over 2-3 cookies at a time.
Bake the circles for about 7-8 minutes until they are slightly golden on the edges. Avoid getting them too brown as they could snap while folding if they get too fried up!
Also, if it’s not brown enough, then the cookie might tear apart when you try to fold its edges over.
A real challenge there, huh?
Note: This is where an extra pair of hands will come in handy as it could be challenging and tedious to fold each cookie individually all by yourself.
Remove them from the oven. This is where you slip in your note into them.
After inserting the note, fold the circles up quickly into semicircles, with a deft hand. Bring the ends down on to the edge or lip of a bowl or cup to crimp them up.
All of this should be done while they are still hot!
Finally, once the cookies are done and crimped up, place them into a muffin tin so that they hold their shape. Let the cookies cool and get on with making the second batch if there’s enough batter left.
